Monograms

2F/2M

Monograms examines the life of poet Hazel Hall (1886-1924) who lived primarily through her imagination, being confined to a wheelchair in her second story room in a house in Portland, Oregon. She experienced national recognition from Harriet Monroe, the famed editor of Poetry magazine, but it was the sacrifice of her sister that made the poems available to the world.

“The layers [of the play] create multilateral realms through which the past reality of Hall’s reclusive life, the eternal fantasy of her poetry, and the present abstraction of Mach’s imagination interweave and the haunting breath of the past permeating the play carries the audience into the romantic terrain of recalling and recreating . . .”
